The Electoral Commission of a Ghana has sent a warning to the general public that ‘Guarantor Contractor’ is illegal.
The commission says their attention is drawn to development at registration centres where certain people are acting as ‘Guarantor Contractors”.
“Such an act is illegal in the constitutional instrument (CI) 91 and the officials of the committee will not hesitate to hand over such persons to the security agencies to face the law,” they warn.
According to the (CI) 91, it is an offence to “Make an entry of statement, which is that person knows to be false or does not believe to be true for the purpose of registering voter.”
According to the (CI) 19, a registered voter can only guaranty for applicant’s parents, siblings and guardian.
A guarantor is required to swear an oath affirming his or her relationship with the applicants.
The commission further noted that people guilty of such offence are liable on summary conviction to a fine of five hundred (500) penalty units or two (2) years prison terms or both.
